₹80.00मौर्यकाळात डोंगर खोदून गुहा-मंदिरे निर्माण करण्याची परंपरा सुरू झाली. या गुहा मंदिरांचे चैत्य आणि विहार असे दोन प्रकार आहेत. चैत्य म्हणजे पूजागृहे (चैत्य मंदिरे) आणि विहार म्हणजे भिक्खूं (भिक्षु) ची निवासस्थाने होत. ‘चैत्य’ची मूळ कल्पना मंदिरात अनुकरण केली गेली. बुद्धाची पहिली मूर्ती (इ.स. ७८) सम्राट कनिष्क यांच्या काळात बनविली गेली. त्यानंतर त्या सगुण रूपाची पूजा करताना ‘आलय’ ची गरज भासली. तेच बुद्धालय (प्रत्यक्षात बुद्धमूर्ती आलय) म्हणजे बुद्ध मंदिर होय. म्हणजेच चैत्य स्तूपाऐवजी बुद्ध मूर्तीची स्थापना केलेले आलय हे नंतर बुद्ध मंदिर म्हणून नावारूपाला आले.
