The Dharma chakra (Sanskrit/Hindi/Marathi: धर्मचक्र, Pali: Dhammacakka) or wheel of dharma is a symbol used in the Dharmic religions. It is particularly widespread in Buddhism.
The Wheel of the Law (Dharmachakra) is the single most important symbol of Buddhism, Denoting the Buddha’s First Sermon in the forest at Sarnath, where he set Buddhist Law (dharma) in motion.
The Dharmachakra, or wheel of the law, represents the Eightfold Path, which is a set of eight practices in Buddhism:
- Right view: An accurate understanding of the nature of things, especially the Four Noble Truths
- Right resolve: Avoiding thoughts of hatred, attachment, and harmful intent
- Right speech: Refraining from verbal misdeeds like lying and divisive speech
- Right actions: Right conduct
- Right livelihood: Right occupation
- Right effort: Samma vayama
- Right mindfulness: Samma sati
- Right concentration: Samma samadhi, which can also mean equanimous meditative awareness or meditative absorption or union
The Noble Eightfold Path is a method for attaining the end of suffering, as described in the Fourth Noble Truth.
